Remember that “there is no situation so bad, that by my own actions, I cannot make it worse.”
Here are some things I can do to make my situation worse. Here are things to watch out for:
I can ruminate, brood, actively suppress and avoid reminders, engage in safety behaviors that perpetuate and exacerbate personal distress, feel sorry for myself, blame myself, dwell on feelings on guilt, shame, anger, moral injury, clam up, keep secrets, avoid seeking help, engage in negative thinking, turn people off, view setbacks and failures as “end points,” give up, use substances as a self-medication device. My doing these things will increase my emotional pain and hurt the ones I love.
